                    She is internationally recognized for her pioneering work in biblical interpretation and feminist theology.  Her teaching and research focuses on questions of biblical rhetoric, hermeneutics, early Christian historiography as well as on the ethics and politics of interpretation.  A native of Germany, she was elected as the first woman president of the Society of Biblical Literature in 1987.  She is the author of numerous books on biblical interpretation and early Christianity and is the founding co-editor of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion.
