Leading scientist of language acquisition and a pioneer in the study of signed languages. Her work demonstrates a 'sensitive' biological period for the acquisition of language, during which children can learn languages, either spoken or signed, with equal ease, even from reduced or altered input. Her current work focuses on developing a computational theory of the mechanisms by which languages are learned and on examining neural plasticity for language after early damage to the brain.
