Directed the Central Park Task Force from 1975 until her appointment as Central Park administrator in 1979. Helped found the Central Park Conservancy in 1980. Has written on Frederick Law Olmsted and on the history of park, garden, and urban design. Publications include Landscape Design: A Cultural and Architectural History and The Forests and Wetlands of New York City.
