Dussel is one of the founders (in the Latin America of the 1960s-70s) of what came to be known as the "Philosophy of Liberation." It was originally focused narrowly on opposition to the Latin American dictatorships of the period. Subsequently it has developed far more broadly into a distinctive "Global South" perspective within the discipline of philosophy, challenging the legacies of European colonialism and imperialism, not merely in the forms of economic poverty and underdevelopment in the former Third World, but also in the Eurocentric narratives and conceptual frameworks that have shaped global consciousness for the past few hundred years. He is today (no exaggeration) its most important figure.
