Distinguished Professor of Biology. Pioneered the development of three active areas of evolutionary ecology: optimal foraging (rules that organisms should use in choosing what and where to eat), sex allocation (sex ratio and its extension to hermaphrodites), and life history invariants (rules in the statistical relationships among different life history attributes across diverse species). Pioneered the development of metabolic ecology: body size and temperature rules in the determination of biological rates and times.
