Research focuses on ecology and biogeochemistry. He did pioneering studies of acid rain and its effects on aquatic ecosystems in the 1950's and 1960's, and discovered extreme accumulation of radioactive fallout by mosses and lichens. In the 1960's and 1970's he studied fossilized plant pigments as guides to lake productivity, evolution, and the origin of sedimentary organic water. From the 1950's to the present, he investigated the ecology and biogeochemistry of peatlands, focusing on (1) acidification processes and (2) role in the global carbon cycle. He has also written several papers on the history of research in ecology and biogeochemistry.
