Area
Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Specialty
Chemistry
Elected
2018
Toste has been responsible for the renaissance in the area of organic transformations catalyzed by gold (Au) complexes, including isomerization, addition, rearrangement, oxidative functionalization, enantioselective cycloaddition, hydroamination and fluorination catalysis, and the use of chiral counterions as a new paradigm for asymmetric catalysis. The Toste group has made interdisciplinary contributions to catalysis on surfaces, supramolecular chemistry, and the conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels. Recognition for Toste's work includes the IUPAC prize in Synthetic Organic Chemistry, the American Chemical Society Cope Scholar and E. J. Corey Awards, and awards from chemical societies in the UK, Japan, Belgium and Germany.
