Fernando Alvarez has made central contributions to financial economics, monetary theory, international trade theory, and labor economics. In each of these areas his work is characterized by rigorous and creative use of economic theory to address an ever-expanding body of empirical evidence. Each of these fields has its own expertise, of course, but the remarkable breadth of Fernando’s interest and knowledge helps all of us by distributing valuable new ideas more widely.
