Mogae was the third president of Botswana, 1998-2008. Earlier he had been vice-president and minister of finance. He was awarded the African Leadership Prize in 2008. He is also a Trustee of the Rhodes Trust. Botswana ranks as the best governed country on mainland Africa, according to the Index of African Governance, and as the least corrupt country in the African Union, according to both Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index and the World Bank's Control of Corruption indicator. He lead Botswana into an atmosphere of increased tolerance and economic growth. Botswana, under his watch, and since has grown steadily for two decades at nearly 7 percent per annum. Botswana is now among the non-oil producers of Africa with the highest GDP per capita.
