He has been publishing fiction since 1971: novels and short stories. He has won the PEN/Malamud Award for achievement in the short story and the Award of Merit of the Academy of Arts and Letters for a lifetime's achievement in the short story. He has twice been a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner and was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award. He has won the National Jewish Book Award and several fellowships -- Woodrow Wilson, NEQ, James Merrill, and Guggenheim.
