Research largely on the sequences of amino acids in proteins and of nucleotides in nucleic acids. Developed the DNP method for identifying the end groups of proteins, and other partial hydrolysis methods for amino acid sequencing. Determined the complete amino acid sequence of insulin. Developed partial hydrolysis methods to give limited data on nucleotide sequences in RNA and DNA A new approach to DNA sequencing using DNA polymerase and dideoxy nucleotides as terminaters made it possible to obtain rapid sequences of DNA. The method is being widely used to sequence various genomes including human.
