Made seminal discoveries in the elucidation of basic biological mechanisms vital to biotechnology, notably protein secretion, oxidative protein folding and RNA catabolism and more recently in development of protein therapeutics. Invented 3 protein drugs undergoing clinical evaluation (Anthim™ an anthrax prophylactic antibody, and the anti-cancer enzymes AERase™ and AECase™) and developed protein production technologies critical for the manufacturing of Lucentis™ and Preos™. He developed the technology that enabled for the first time the molecular level identification of human circulating antibodies. This has proved invaluable for vaccine design and optimization and for the discovery of therapeutic antibodies.
