Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences; formerly Deputy Director of the Steward Observatory. Infrared astronomer. Co-discoverer of ultraluminous and starburst galaxies. Carried out pioneering infrared observations of active galactic nuclei, the Galactic Center, low mass stars, brown dwarfs, and the solar system. Developed methods for infrared telescope optimization and many instruments for ground-based telescopes. Leader of space instrumentation programs for SIRTF (Principal Investigator for the Multiband Infrared Photometer for Spitzer) and JWST (Science Team Lead for the Mid-Infrared Instrument). Author of "Detection of Light from the Ultraviolet to the Submillimeter," (Cambridge University Press), "Measuring the Universe," (Cambridge University Press), and "The Last of the Great Observatories: Spitzer and the Era of Faster, Better, Cheaper at NASA," (University of Arizona Press).
