Continuing research since 1945 in the Mexican village of Tzintzuntzan has provided data and theoretical insights on peasant society and its transformation. He has written on the Image of Limited Good, a zero-sum hypothesis advanced to explain peasant conservatism; on Greek humoral medicine as ancestor of much Latin American Popular medicine, including hot-cold beliefs about food and herbal remedies; on envy; and on long-term field research in social anthropology. He was among the first to utilize anthropological concepts and research methodologies in post-World War II and World Health Organization international health programs.
