Professor of Medicine (Medical Genetics) and Genome Sciences. Conducts research in molecular hematology, including the cellular control of hemoglobin switching. Showed (with Thalia Papayannopoulou) that fetal hemoglobin can be induced by perturbations of erythopoiesis by cytotoxic drugs, providing the basis for the introduction of cytotoxic drug treatment in hemoglobinopathies.
