George William Crabtree
Crabtree was an expert in superconductivity and magnetism. He showed that superconducting and magnetic phases are not always mutually exclusive by establishing a narrow range of coexistence near the ferromagnetic re-entrant transition. Crabtree laid the foundation for the science of vortex matter, establishing phase boundaries, transitions and dynamic behavior among lattice, liquid, and glassy states. He worked on many other aspects of superconductivity, including fundamental studies of fluctuations in high-temperature superconductors and two-band superconductivity in MgB2. Knowledgeable on energy science, technology and policy issues, and principal editor of several Department of Energy reports including Basic Research Needs for a Hydrogen Economy, Solar Energy Conversion, Materials under Extreme Environments, and Science for Energy Technology. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
