Research centered on nuclear reactions induced by high energy (GeV) protons and other elementary particles in various target elements, the goal being a detailed understanding of the reaction mechanisms involved. He also worked on solar neutrino detection, particularly pioneering the gallium detector which was then successfully employed in the GALLEX and SAGE experiments. After retiring from active research, he became Editor-in Chief of Science Spectra. He has long been active in Planned Parenthood and in various pro-choice organizations.
