Work ranges over the application of literary theory to detective fiction, historical and philosophical problems, Greek fragments, Raphael's The School of Athens, and the textual and visual history of the Doubting Thomas. Translated Hesiod for the Loeb Library. First Classicist to be awarded Germany's Leibniz Prize. Recent books in English include Doubting Thomas (2011), The Classical Tradition (2010), and Ancient Anger: Perspectives from Homer to Galen (2003). Has also published in French and German.
