Logan's research contributed to the understanding of cognitive control and attention, prerequisites for flexible, goal-directed behavior. His race model positing competing decision outcomes offered a new theoretical perspective on cognitive control, and his instantiation of response inhibition within his stop-signal paradigm was used in neuroscience, psychopathology and developmental psychology. His instance theory of automatization changed how skill acquisition and automaticity by integrating attention and memory are viewed. He continues to develop quantitative models of perceptual grouping, object- and space-based attention, dual-task performance, task switching and visual search. Recently, he coauthored a theory of choice that unites behavioral and single neuron results.
