Gordon Plotkin is a theoretical computer scientist and Professor at the University of Edinburgh. He is regarded for his structural approach for computer programming, which established a semantic framework for programming languages and helped to standardize computer science. Plotkin has contributed to the fields of artificial intelligence, logic, and linguistics.

He is co-founder of the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science at University of Edinburgh and has conducted work with Microsoft in the past, and now with Google.

Plotkin is a Fellow of the Royal Society, from which he has received the Wolfson Research Merit Award and the Milner Award. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Member of the Academia Europæa.
