Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois; QuesTek Innovations LLC, Evanston, Illinois ~Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science and Engineering; Chief Science Officer. Known as the father of materials design. Building on his early research on theory of structural transformations, founded a research consortium in 1985 that pioneered the computational design of materials as dynamic multiscale systems, integrating the disciplines of materials science, applied mechanics, and quantum physics. In 1997, cofounded the computational materials design company QuesTek Innovations LLC to commercialize materials design services and a range of computationally designed high-performance materials now in applications. A historic milestone was the pioneering flight, in December 2010, of aircraft landing gear fabricated from Ferrium S53 stainless steel, the first flight-qualified material of fully computational design. Active internationally in engineering design education reform. Created the first undergraduate course in computational materials design and cofounded a number of initiatives in design education at undergraduate and graduate levels.~
