Dr. Gretchen C. Daily is the Bing Professor in Environmental Science, a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, and Director of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford University. She is also Co-Director of the Natural Capital Project, a partnership among Stanford University, the Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and the University of Minnesota, whose goal is to align economic forces with conservation. Daily's work spans scientific research, teaching, public education, and working with leaders to advance practical approaches to environmental challenges. Daily pioneered the field of countryside biogeography to evaluate and enhance the ability of human-dominated ecosystems to maintain biodiversity and deliver ecosystem services. This includes research on the future dynamics of biodiversity change in rural areas, the scope for harmonizing biodiversity conservation and agriculture, and quantifying the production and value of ecosystem services across landscapes. She is a leader in interdisciplinary efforts to translate scientific knowledge of the environment into sound policy initiatives, and in bringing that knowledge to the public. Daily has received the Heinz Award, the Midori Prize for Biodiversity, the Sophie Award, the International Cosmos Prize, and numerous other prestigious awards. She has also been named in Discovery Magazine's 20 Scientists to Watch and 50 Most Important Women in Science. Her articles appear in numerous journals including Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
