Sohi pioneered the design of out-of-order superscalar (OOO) processors and thread-level speculation processors. His design for OOO processors became the basis for several commercial designs, from the world’s leading manufacturers of microprocessors. Several billion microprocessors, found in smartphones, personal computers, and servers are based on this design. He also invented several important mechanisms for microprocessors, including one which has enabled high performance and lower energy consumption in several recent microprocessors. His pioneering work has been widely adopted, has had lasting impact on industry and his research area, and has been widely recognized by his peers.
