Leading proponent of the view that species can arise from other species in situ, that is, sympatrically. Although sympatric speciation was long denied, he and his students have presented exhaustively detailed empirical demonstrations, have performed critical experiments, and have contributed to the theory of species formation. His discoveries provide a better understanding of the orgin and maintenance of species diversity. He currently studies speciation and coevolution between endemic Galpagos insects and plants.
