Research interests in mathematical demography and ecology, particularly matrix population models and their applications. Current studies include the role of stochastic factors in plant, animal, and human demography, the determinants of lifetime reproductive output, the formal demography of kinship, and models for the response of populations to perturbations. He introduced the use of eigenvalue perturbation analyses into population biology and has developed new methods for describing the population dynamics of species with complex life cycles.
