Research focuses on carbohydrate metabolism in microorganisms. He elucidated the mechanisms whereby compounds containing only 2 carbon atoms could serve as sole carbon source for the growth of a variety of bacteria and fungi and originated the concept of anaplerotic routes. In recent years, he has published extensively on the genetic control of carbohydrate transport and how mutants altered in this can open up novel metabolic pathways.
