Hollis Research Professor of Divinity. Thelogian and religious scholar whose work on world Christianity, liberation theology, the changing definition of the relationship between religion, politics, and global culture attracted international attention. First book, The Secular City (1965), characterized Christianity as a dynamic community for change rather than a static institution and sold over a million copies. It has been translated into seventeen languages. The Seduction of the Spirit (1974) was a National Book Award finalist. Named to Harvard Divinity School's Hollis Professorship, the oldest endowed chair in American higher education. His most recent work is The Future of Faith (2009).
