Discovered gene defects causing premature heart disease and characterized the essential role of these genes in limiting cholesterol accumulation. Demonstrated that low-frequency alleles collectively contribute to concentrations of plasma lipoproteins and identified genetic differences that protect against heart disease by lowering blood-cholesterol levels.
