Director. Performed pioneering work on the synthesis of nanocrystalline materials. Contributions have led to major technological innovations, including the new field of nanostructured materials. In the 1980s introduced the idea of synthesizing materials with nanocrystalline (_< 100 nm) grain size to achieve superior and novel properties. In 1995 Herbert Gleiter initiated a new field of Materials Science by developing nanostructured non-crystalline materials that are called today nano-glasses. It is the attractive perspective of these nano-glasses that they have the potential to open the way to a world of new technologies because their properties differ from the properties of  all the crystalline materials available today. By analogy to the discovey of bronze, iron, semiconductors, etc.in the past,   the utilization of these new propertiesl may open the way into a “glass age" .  Today more than 800 papers are published annually in this new area of Materials Science and about 6 to 8 international conferences on nano-materials are organized every year. In 2011 more than 80 000 publications in the field  of nanomaterials were retrieved by the Web of Science,
