He invented laser Doppler velocimetry and photon correlation spectroscopy, and pioneered light-scattering techniques to study diffusion, size, and shape of particles in solution. His elegant experiments have provided insight on phase transitions, interfacial phenomena in melting, scaling near critical points, excitons in semiconductors, biological particles in solution, and liquid-glass forming systems.
