Authority on the history of music from the 18th through the 20th centuries, particularly the history and theory of musical performance, the history of music theory and aesthetics, and music analysis. In addition to his position at Humboldt University, he has served for many years as director of research at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. He is a board member of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung in Munich, and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. He received honorary Doctor of Music degrees from Royal Holloway (University of London) and from the National University of Music at Bucharest.
