Since 1998 served as art critic at The New York Times. He is an articulate champion of the visual arts in America, most especially the work of cultural minorities that are often neglected by other critics. A powerful voice for the plurality of our society, he also brings his background as a poet to his journalistic writing, finding words to express the nonverbal aspect of art. His balanced and thoughtful criticism always seeks to express the humanistic qualities that make the art of diverse voices accessible to a general public. Honors include the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2009.
