Taught at Humboldt University since 1993. He previously served at the University of Hamburg and has also been a Permanent Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin. Bredekamp is considered an innovative art historian in Germany and a European leader in studies in the humanities. In 2000 he founded the project "The technical image" at the Hermann von Helmholtz-Centre for Agricultural Engineering (PAC) of the Humboldt University Berlin, which under his leadership developed visually critical methods and a theory of pictorial knowledge in the fields of science, technology, and medicine. Since 2008 Bredekamp has directed the newly established DFG-Kolleg research group Picture Act and Embodiment, since 2012 the cluster of excellence "Image, knowledge, Gestaltung" at the Humboldt University.
