Educator and mentor for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students for four decades. Initiator of the thermodynamic method now used routinely for calculating how nucleic acids fold. He has devised and applied novel spectroscopic methods to determine structures of nucleic acids, thus improving significantly our understanding of their function.
