First to use models to compare to data to explicate the annual cycle of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, in particular, the relative roles of advection and sources and sinks. Showed, by examining the meridional gradient of CO2, that the northern hemisphere had to have a major land sink of CO2. First U.S. scientist to build a coupled climate-carbon model. Examined methane cycle, aerosol dust and soot cycle, and iron cycle and their effects on nutrient limitation in the ocean. Contributed to GISS climate model and NCAR community coupled climate model. Almost unique in her background and knowledge of both climate dynamics and biogeochemical cycles and equally adept at theory, modeling, and data analysis. Has an h-number of 53 and almost 12,000 citations to her work, per ISI Web of Science, placing her among top working geoscientists. Fellow, American Geophysical Union, and the American Meteorological Society. Member, National Academy of Sciences.
