Jacquelyn Grant
Jacquelyn Grant is the Fuller E. Callaway Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) and founder/director of the Center for Black Women in Church and Society at ITC. Ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, she helped establish the denomination's Women in Ministry group, which later developed into its Commission on Women in Ministry.
She is recognized as one of the founders of womanist theology—a field centering the religious and ethical experiences of Black women. Her best-known work, White Women’s Christ and Black Women’s Jesus, became Scholars Press's bestseller, and she edited Perspectives on Womanist Theology. She has lectured internationally, served on ecumenical councils, and received honors including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ministry Award.
Dr. Grant earned an M.Div. from Turner Theological Seminary, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Union Theological Seminary—the first Black woman to earn that degree there. She began teaching at ITC in 1981 and has served in that role for over forty years.
