Poetry scholar and literary historian of broad international scope. Co-editor of The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry (2003) and The Norton Anthology of English Literature (2006, 2012, 2018), and associate editor of The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics (2012). An original thinker and leading scholar of modern poetry. First book offered a fresh reading of W.B. Yeats; the next, Poetry of Mourning (1994), was the first book on the modern elegy. The Hybrid Muse (2001) pioneered the study of postcolonial poetry in Africa, India, the Caribbean, and elsewhere. A Transnational Poetics (2009) developed a global approach to literature. Poetry and Its Others (2013) was the first book to approach poetry through its dialogue with other discourses, especially news, prayer, and song.
