An original thinker and leading scholar of modern poetry. First book offered a fresh reading of W.B. Yeats; the next, Poetry of Mourning (1994), was the first book on the modern elegy. The Hybrid Muse (2001) pioneered the study of postcolonial poetry in Africa, India, the Caribbean, and elsewhere. A Transnational Poetics (2009) developed a global approach to literature. Poetry and Its Others (2013) inventively approached poetry through its dialogue with other discourses, such as news, prayer, and song.
