Following his pioneering work in making measurements with high altitude rockets (1946-1957) on cosmic rays, aurorae, atmospheric ozone and geomagnetism, he specialized in observational research on the radiation belts and magnetospheres of the Earth, Jupiter, and Saturn, and on cosmic rays in the outer heliosphere using instruments on satellites and planetary spacecrafts.
