Made discoveries concerning the repair of double-strand chromosome breaks by homologous recombination and nonhomologous end-joining, especially by developing methods to observe DNA repair in real time. Explored the links between DNA repair and normal DNA replication and investigated how DNA-damaged cells resume mitosis after repair.
