Professor of History of Art, Emeritus. Scholar and teacher of Northern Renaissance art with contributions to the history of early Netherlandish painting, Passion iconography, and manuscript illumination of the late Middle Ages. Established new ways of framing illusionistic representation in religious art. Combining analytic acuity with the use of unknown materials, he brought to light vast quantities of previously unpublished manuscripts, which he photographed and made available to other scholars.
