Radio astronomer working in very-long-baseline interferometry. Studies celestial masers, such as the radical OH and molecules H2[sub]O and SiO, which encode information about their environments and yield insights into processes such as star formation. Led the international group that found the best evidence for the existence of a supermassive black hole, leading to the currently accepted size scale of the universe. Guided the design and construction of the SAO Sub-Millimeter Array in Hawaii, used for astrophysical studies at sub-millimeter wavelengths. Coauthored Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy (1986).
