Franklin's research focuses on human impacts on the dynamics of terrestrial (land) ecosystems, especially plant communities, at the landscape scale. She has addressed question in this field by developing species distribution models, combined with geospatial data analysis and extensive field work. This work has produced insights into the effect of human-altered fire regimes on ecosystems, and the role of early humans in shaping ecological communities. Franklin is a an elected member of both the National Academy of Sciences and American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. Her current research seeks to hone methods for predicting the impacts of climate change and land use change on biodiversity and species distributions.
