A leading investigator in the area of metabolism, his research focuses on mechanisms responsible for diabetes and obesity. He has uncovered novel genetic and autoimmune mechanisms for insulin resistance, and has defined features of the physiologic control system for body weight regulation and adaptation to starvation. Recent work examines the mechanisms by which peripheral hormones such as leptin influence the brain to regulate metabolism and endocrine function. Dean of Harvard Medical School from 2007 to 2019. Currently writing on diverse topics related to the state of medicine, biomedical research, and the academy.
