                    Curator Emeritus in Archaeology and contributing editor, Archaeology magazine. Showed how indigenous groups developed in the United States. Work spans the pre-Hispanic and Hispanic eras from 15,000 BC to the Eighteenth Century AD. Documented the spectrum of social and political organization displayed by many groups and the impact of European colonization. Author of numerous books, including Archaeology of Precolumbian Florida (1994), for which he was awarded the Mooney Book Award and the Rembert Patrick Book Prize.
