Research focuses on ancient Maya civilization. He has undertaken field research in Mexico and Guatemala. In particular, he has investigated such questions as the demise of many Classic Maya cities in the Southern Maya Lowlands at the end of the Classic Period; the social, political, and economic nature of the Terminal Classic and Postclassic Periods of Maya civilization; and ancient Maya settlement patterns and trade. He also has made contributions to archaeological theory and method, to the history of American archaeology, and to the relevance of archaeology in the modern world.
