Ms. Jeri Laber is the Founder and Advisor of the Human Rights Watch. From her work, Ms. Laber has done research on former Communist countries as well as the former Soviet Union. She was the Former Executive Director of Helsinki Watch and is an Author of The Courage of Strangers: Coming of Age with the Human Rights Movement and of A Nation is Dying: Afghanistan Under the Soviets, 1979-1987 with Barnett R. Rubin. She is a member of the New York City Council on Foreign Relations and consultant of the International Freedom to Publish Committee of the Association of American Publishers. She is the recipient of the Order of Merit by President Vaclav Havel on behalf of the Czech Republic, and Alumna of the Year Award from Columbia University in 2003.
