Leading art historian of ancient Chinese art and long-time, renowned keeper of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum. Research focuses in particular on the cosmology of the Han period (206 BCE-220 CE) and its relation to tombs and their decoration. Involved in a number of high-profile exhibitions such as the Mysteries of Ancient China. Contributed, in collaboration with Evelyn S. Rawski and others, to the catalogue of China: The Three Emperors by Frances Wood that accompanied the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London (2005-06). Member of the scholars' council of the Kluge Center at the Library of Congress and a member of the Art Fund's Advisory Council. Fellow of the British Academy and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of services to oriental studies.
