Mappes is an evolutionary ecologist working at the interface of theory and empirical research. Her most recent foci have been the evolution of aposematic and mimicry coloration and cooperation and conflict in chemically defended prey, as well as the evolution of bacterial virulence. Mappes is the Director of The Centre of Excellence in Biological Interactions, spearheading research combining mathematical modelling and empirical research to study biological interactions in ecologically realistic settings. She has published over 160 papers and published these in top journals, including 6 Nature papers, 2 Science papers, PNAS, Ecology Letters and <i.>Evolution. She is an elected Fellow of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.</i.>
