The dominant figure in English legal history, he is the author of a vast number of books and articles. He is a Q.C., an Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple, and a Fellow of the British Academy. President of the Selden Society and general editor of both the Cambridge Studies in English Legal History and Oxford History of the Laws of England. Recipient of numerous awards and an LL.D. from the University of Chicago.
