Primary work is the writing of poetry. Academic studies have included critical books on the nature and structure of verse, allusiveness in poetry, relations between music and poetry, and between poetry and art, and in recent articles explorations of privacy, domesticity, food, deliberate falsehood, and relations between people and animals as they have been dealt with in literature. His teaching is in the early modern period, in nineteenth-century American poetry and in modern literature.
